About

AN EXPEDITION INTO THE MIND OF ŁUKASZ KOWALCZUK

There is a place where wrestlers from all over the universe meet, mutants, American gangsters, reptilians, werepigs, headless pirates, barbarians, bulldogs on skateboards and a whole lot of other strange characters. It’s a small place, but time and space work differently inside it. The place is the Mind of Łukasz Kowalczuk. mia ART GALLERY and the Alias Foundation invite everyone for a journey into the land of his imagination – an exhibition of comics and illustrations, which will run from the 25th of July to the 8th of August at mia ART GALLERY. During the exhibition, a comics workshop and a meeting with Łukasz Kowalczuk will take place.

ŁUKASZ KOWALCZUK

Łukasz was born in 1983 in the city of Puck in norther Poland. At bedtime, his father read him comics published by the National Publishing Agency (Krajowa Agencja Wydawnicza) and Orbita, which his mother didn’t mind (they only kept the Szinkiel titles out of reach). The first comic book that he read on his own was Rod Taylor’s Friends by Jerzy Wróblewski. Next came the era of superheroes and comic from TM-Semic – a publishing house he honoured in 2013 by writing a book about it. Łukasz did not attend any artistic university programme, and he also dropped out of the Fine Arts High School, because he didn’t want to “study with hippies”. Today, he regrets the decision sometimes, because he has problems with drawing a horse’s back, or generic, smiling townspeople.
