We may be living in a time that does not allow exhibitions, but that does not mean that artists have stopped creating and, more importantly, feeling and thinking. Paradoxically, the time of the pandemic has abounded in violent political, social and religious events. Internal divisions have widened and social reactions have been violent and often very painful. One of the most important proofs of this has become the exhibition entitled The Choice, organised by the Galeria Sztuki Współczesnej “Pastula” from Poręby Kupieńskie in the Sub-Carpathian region. The gallery is certainly not located near the main artistic routes, but its activities are very ambitious and Pastuła shows no complexes that could result from the remote location. He invites renowned artists, and they are happy to accept these invitations. The exhibition The Choice is perfect evidence of this. It was also recognised by Piotr Sarzyński in his ranking summarising the year 2020 in exhibitions in Polityka, placing it at number 8.

Currently, its second edition has been prepared by the Wrocław-based mia ART GALLERY, with the hope of presenting the exhibition to the slightly wider Wrocław audience this time.

The exhibition THE CHOICE was organised spontaneously in the non-commercial Galeria Sztuki Współczesnej “Pastula” in Poręby Kupieńskie between 14 November and 31 December 2020.

The exhibition refers to the current social and political situation in Poland – it is a multi-themed protest of the 22 artists I invited. Only 22, although the positive response to the invitation exceeded my wildest expectations.

Due to the limited exhibition possibilities, I had to abandon further invitations. As you can see, the subject is topical and important. The works of the participants of the exhibition point to a huge creative potential and to the emotions accompanying the artistic process, which are revealed in the presented works directly or more subtly.

The artists, who are welcomed by nearly all modern art museums in Poland, this time exhibit their works in a tiny provincial gallery, in solidarity with those who – no matter where they live, in the countryside or in large urban centres – want freedom of choice.
