Reflections in Blue

Curator : Bogusław Deptuła Opening : 12.02.2021 | mia ART GALLERY, Pl. Solny 11

About

Square formats, gentle chromatic divisions inside. The fluctuations of colour are minimal and subdued, and when so few elements make up this depiction, each ingredient is of great importance. When a thin white line – or the opposite, blue – appear in the space of the canvas, they become a true event, determining the character of the entire composition. The form of these paintings is incredibly static. It is made up of geometrised and subdued colour fields.

Urszula Ślusarczyk composes silence. The makes sure that nothing in her paintings disturbs this painterly silence of quiet colours. Using the most delicate hues, she plays what could be called her painterly blues. After all, these nostalgic songs have just such a pedigree. I don’t know if the painter will like the association with blues, but that is the way my reflections resulting from the colour scheme of her paintings went.

And since we are on the subject of colours, the blue colour scheme is in a way the richest and most diverse of all. From the lightest cerulean blue (French, bleu celestique), the colour of a cloudless sky, through cobalt and indigo, all the way to Prussian blue, which appears almost black when laid down in a covering layer. In Ula Ślusarczyk’s paintings such a strong and dramatic colour accent is probably impossible, but I am only talking about the potential power hidden in the range of blues the painter reaches for so gladly. There are achromatic beiges and browns, but they only serve the role of a kind of mirror in which the blues can see and find themselves.

Blue is the colour of passing away, disappearance, death; therefore, it is also certainly the colour of silence.
