About
“My painting is an attempt to tame and process the surrounding reality into my own. For many years, I focused mainly on landscapes – with their moods, light, and changeability. For nearly ten years, this has evolved towards less concrete forms, a narration built with a language of free movement, abstraction and actions freed from the dictates of reason. The subjects I take on, much like the painting process itself, are usually intimate and close, such as the relationships of forms, wonder, escape, breathing, and depth. It is important to me that painting be something free and separate from hard reality, that it be a counterweight to reality.
Generally, I do not specify my expectations prior to painting – not regarding its course, or the final result, except perhaps one thing: that it be something that completely changes me, my life from that moment on, and everything around me. The specificity of painting lies, among other things, in its separateness from verbal communication, on escaping the established theories and criteria, on playing with everything, while still remaining oneself. My painting is a way to discover myself, it doesn’t have to smart or serve a purpose. I’m in favour of completely free painting, or even freeing painting from art itself.” Piotr Butkiewicz
