Marian Wołczuk | The color diares
16.12. 2023 - 13.01.2024
curators: Bogusław Deptuła, Iwona Rosiak
A new day is like an assignment for a new painting, and retirement offers freedom. Time has slowed down, but Marian Wolczuk's painting has sped up.
The colours are intense and contrasting, with each painting you may wonder which one to reach for. There are many tubes of paint, even more combinations. The palette offers an endless array of possibilities. Time has slowed down somewhat, many responsibilities have gone. Painting has become necessary, though not compulsory. One can try endlessly, and what's more, each attempt can be another finished painting. Tomorrow, too, is a day and the freedom to reach for new colour harmonies - to contrast differently, to syncopate differently, to phrase differently, the nuancing of colours is extremely engaging. Looking at Wolczuk's paintings, we can see that painting is a great element, an element of freedom of choice, and at the same time a field of everyday experimentation. One can look at the paintings of the Wrocław painter as a peculiarly conceived colour diary, created daily and growing daily.
The studio is door to door with the flat. You can drop in at any time. There is always something to do. The painter's paintings follow colour combinations, tones, nuances, but also contrasts. They are his element, his inspiration and the fabric of this art.
Previously, there was more structure and less colour in his paintings; now it is the colours that have become their structure, they are in charge. Freedom and languor have arrived, and the resulting paintings are united by a homogeneous and harmonious creative method. Painting is like breathing: natural, everyday, regular, unchanging and, I suppose we should add: uninterrupted, unavoidable, irreplaceable.
Bogusław Deptuła
Prof. Marian Wołczuk was born on 19 August 1942 in Podkamień. Graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław in 1970, in the Faculty of Painting. Continuously associated with his alma mater until 2020.
At the Faculty of Interior Design and Industrial Design, he held the posts of Vice-Dean and Dean of the Faculty. There, he was also Head of the Department of General Education for 17 years.
He practises painting and drawing. His artistic biography also includes a flirtation with glass (2004-2007), which fascinated him with the infinite possibilities of colour creation. Colour is the area of the language of painting that he loves the most, seeking in it the possibility of telling a story about the human condition. His masterful intuition for colour gives him the opportunity to interpret the times in which he lives, with a particular focus on the fate of man and his entanglement in the surrounding space, through an intuitively applied aura made of colours. Colour guides him, he tells stories through colour and builds his painterly identity. Prof. Marian Wołczuk has had 48 solo exhibitions, he has also exhibited his works in group exhibitions in Poland and in Portugal, Canada, USA, Switzerland, France Japan, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and Sweden.
He has been awarded the Golden Badge of 'Merit to Polish Culture' and the Medal of 'Merit to Culture Gloria Artis'.
