“We live in times of performance; everything is a performance. It used to be theatre and now it’s performance. I like this word in its Polish transcription - performans. There is something in it of perforation, defloration, permanence, peripeteia and peristalsis of the bowels. Words have great power, Max, their meanings are not that important anymore, they can be picked at will and associated in any way.”*

The meeting with Waldemar Okoń’s poetry at Mia ART GALLERY is a bold attempt to liberate the words from the compulsory space of the white page and giving them an additional function as a gallery artefact.

This specific game, which has in it something of performance or artistic reflection, has a worthy historical background.

We have become accustomed to the declaration BYŁO JEST BĘDZIE [IT WAS IT IS IT WILL BE] on the wall of the Contemporary Museum Wrocław, which carries the memory of Stanisław Dróżdż and Concrete Poetry. This is our Wrocław speciality, under the sign of conceptual art. Except that Waldemar Okoń's poetry is not-concrete poetry.

Its power lies in creating sensitive parallel worlds, close to the work of visual artists, above the shape of the letters.

This is not surprising. The author's biography clearly shows traces of the merging of poetry and art in the realm of inspiration. You could say that Okoń has always balanced on the edge between world and image.

Born in 1953 in Wrocław. Art historian, art critic, poet. Author of many publications, including collections of studies on the art of the 19th and 20th centuries in books: Sztuka i narracja [Art and Narration] (1988), Alegorie narodowe [National Allegories] (1992), Sztuki siostrzane [Sisterly Arts] (1992),  Wtajemniczenia [Initiations] (1996),  Stygnąca  planeta [A Cooling Planet] (2002), Przeszłość  przyszłości [The Past of the Future] (2006). He has also published poetry volumes: Wiersze   północne [Northern Poems] (1989),  Poematy nadziemne [Overground Poems] (2000), Stonehenge (2001), Wersy dla Orfeusza [Verses for Orpheus] (2003), Księga wersów [A Book of Verses] (2004), Atlantyda [Atlantis] (2007), the screenplay for the theatrical spectacle Antoni S. or the Tower of Babel (1998), a selection of poetic prose Zapisy bez daty [Undated Records] (1998), monographs Jan Matejko and Stanisław Wyspiański (first published in 2001) as well as Kresy w malarstwie  polskim [The Eastern Borderlands in Polish Painting] (2006).

Winner of stipends from the Lanckoroński Foundation and the Fund to Aid Independent Polish Literature and Science, winner of the Szęsny Dettloff Prize, three-time winner of the Award of the Minister of National Education.

Works at the University of Wrocław (since 1980), director of the Institute of Art History (2004-2012), currently director of the Department of Contemporary Art History.

Member of the Polish Writers’ Association (since 1996), for several years has served as vice-president of the Wrocław Chapter of the PWA.

The space for Waldemar Okoń’s words, created at mia ART GALLERY, seizes the audience, inviting them to a remarkable game and creating cooperation. The texts, presented in surprising ways, placed in the realm of audio and video, fuel imagination and ideas, leaving the viewers with a wide margin of interpretation. This is also one of the features of the author's poetic method.

Swiftly written texts, with a teasing, slightly mocking distance of a sage, contradicting overly explicit interpretations.

Waldemar Okoń's literary body of work is a parable about the culture of our times. Literature and art are the warp and weft of the author’s reflections about his surroundings.

The selections of texts he has provided mia ART GALLERY with touches on the essence of what he writes about in a very synthetic form, almost like an SMS.

These short works move, tease and elude simple analysis;

even in selecting the texts, the author made sure that the recipient could interact with the poetic form in a surprising and ambiguous way.

Słowa Waldemara Okonia uwolniła w przestrzeni galerii, z podszeptu pomysłodawczyń Magdy Mielnickiej i Iwony Rosiak, doświadczona artystka wizualna, Małgorzata Kazimierczak, która z delikatnością nałożyła na poezję siatkę własnych pojęć wizualnych.

Wielkim walorem jej pracy było zachowanie proporcji pomiędzy głównym bohaterem wystawy – poezją Waldemara Okonia a sztukami wizualnymi, które przenikają się i podbijają sens słów, równocześnie nie tracąc niczego z charakteru konstruowania wypowiedzi artystycznej  Małgorzaty Kazimierczak.

                  Artystka intermedialna od lat pracująca w obszarze; sztuki idei, koncepcji, przestrzeni instalacyjnej, obiektu, rzeźby, rysunku, grafiki, fotografii, filmu, performance, video-art. Działania te są często dopełniane warstwą teoretyczną, akcjami, wystąpieniami w zależności do relacji: społecznych opartych na interakcji i dialogu lub w odniesieniu do własnej subiektywności. Tworzy projekty wielowarstwowe o charakterze twórczego eksperymentu poznawczego, instalacje przestrzenne, obiekty z wykorzystaniem filmu, światła, dźwięku, słów, znaczeń. Uprawia sztukę łącząc wiele dziedzin mediów i doświadczeń. Często tworzy projekty otwarte, rozłożone w czasie, procesualne, oparte na spotkaniach, działaniu, kontakcie, konstruowane na wielu płaszczyznach. 
                  Ukończyła studia na wydz. Malarstwa, Grafiki i Rzeźby ASP we Wrocławiu. Dyplom z wyróżnieniem w 1995 r. Uzyskała tytuł Doktora Sztuki i pracuje na stanowisku adiunkta w macierzystej uczelni w pracowni Fotografii i Intermediów w Katedrze Rzeźby i Działań Przestrzennych. Zrealizowała kilkadziesiąt wystaw zbiorowych i indywidualnych w kraju i za granicą. Jest zapraszana na międzynarodowe festiwale sztuki: ,,AVE Audio Visueel Experimenteel festival’’ Holandia. ,,Media Sheffield Show” W. Brytania, Wystawa indywidualna Galery E.W Creteil Paris Francja i inne. Otrzymała nagrodę jury na wystawie ,,Inne Media’’ BWA Wrocław. Jest związana od pierwszej edycji z wrocławskim festiwalem WRO gdzie wielokrotnie prezentowała swoje instalacje i filmy, oraz z Galerią Entropia. Należy do nieformalnej grupy artystek realizujących cykle wystaw. W latach 1997-2002 pracowała jako wykładowca we Wrocławskich Szkołach Fotografii; Studium Fotografii PHO-BOS, Wyższa Szkoła Fotografii AFA prowadząc Pracownie Dyplomową Fotografii Artystycznej (promotor dyplomów), Pracownie Plastyczną Instalacji i Obiektu, Pracownie Multimediów i Filmu. Współpracowała z Towarzystwem Kultury Czynnej realizując projekty z dziedziny edukacji i sztuki. Prowadziła warsztaty z młodzieżą wykluczoną w ośrodkach terapeutycznych, Domach Dziecka, oraz z młodzieżą niepełnosprawną współpracując z Fundacją Handicap. Prowadzi warsztaty artystyczne w kraju i za granicą. Kilkanaście lat zajmowała się eksperymentalnym teatrem i pracowała w sferze ekspresji performatywno-ruchowej, poznając swój potencjał poprzez ruch, improwizacje i ciało w alternatywnym teatrze poszukującym Wrocławskiej Grupie Działań Teatralnych. Jest animatorką życia artystycznego jako kurator corocznego cyklu wystaw Sztuki Intermedialnej na Festiwalu Podwodny Wrocław / 9 edycji od 2008 r./ ,,Sztuka Intermedialna, …pomiędzy… percepcją a kontekstem’’, ''Fala/e sztuki'', ''Pomiędzy nadawcą a odbiorcą'','' Rewitaliazcja umysłu/ów'', ''Czy twój umysł nie jest manipulowany?'' i inne..  Jej dotychczasowy dorobek artystyczny został uhonorowany wytypowaniem instalacji przestrzennej audio-wizualnej pt ,,Inkubator Utopii’’ do reprezentacyjnej kolekcji Dolnośląskiej Zachęty Sztuk Pięknych we Wrocławiu oraz w do kolekcji Muzeum Współczesnego Wrocławia.
