A painter or a journalist investigating a crime, a documentary filmmaker or a photographer coolly recording a difficult-to-capture moment of violence, a state of transition? The film frame is frozen still, as if everything were really happening, all the time, only we don’t know it.

Who is Joanna Kaucz? Why does she pose nude for herself, why does she use such realistic obviousness to create an illusion of colourful, pretty and nice works, so that a moment later we get the message that what we see is not quite what we are supposed to see?

She kills herself, causes herself pain, enjoying her excellent technique, showing us her distance towards life and herself.

The extraordinary magnetism of her paintings allows us to move beyond figurativeness to the world of imagination.

The exhibition THE ART OF SELF-CONTROL is the first show of works by Joanna Kaucz in a Wrocław art gallery in nearly ten years. At mia ART GALLERY, the artist will present a selection of her latest paintings, complemented by the best works from the earlier stages of her career.

She reaches for enormous canvasses one moment, only to make a precise painting on a tiny cutting board the next. She is unpredictable. She shows mainly herself, but it is only a pretext to show humanity in general.

What will you see?
